Christian Beliefs  -  Calvinism

Puritan and Reformed writings - Puritan Sermons

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart
from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;"
1Timothy 4.1-2

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
2Peter 2.1-3

Contrasting extreme vs. moderate Calvinism
"moderate" Calvinism probably most accurately defines what Calvin actually taught.

When we all get to heaven... what a day of rejoicing it will be, when we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory.  And we'll all be surprised that the love of God is bigger than all our interpretations of Him, His ways and His Word.  When we all get to heaven... what a day of rejoicing it will be, when we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory.  When we all get to heaven... we'll see Jesus.  Just as He is... regardless of how we thought we got there.

Groups you may want to evaluate...  a good collection of articles (various teachers, purpose stuff, emergent stuff, the Alpha Course, Institute in Basic Life Principles, Deception in the Church, etc.)
Theology Matters!
There are countless numbers of individuals and organizations teaching and preaching a "different gospel" and are amassing millions of followers... be careful and watchful, study the Word of God---The Bible---and watch for those who deny Jesus, who focus on "God" alone, and on "new thought" (AA) and moral behaviour, positive thinking (prosperity, positive confession, etc.) seeker-sensitive, seeker-friendly, etc.   These are just a few flags to mark... study to show thyself approved.  An approved workman is not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.

2Timothy 2.15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  Romans 1.16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Benevolent Ministry or Bondage Making?

Christ vs Moralism by John W Hendryx

http://www.calvinistgadfly.com/?p=47

Our family was involved with the various ministries of the IBLP and ATI for many years and we determined that some of the teachings, the errors of those teachings were destructive to our walk with the LORD and therefore no longer supported the "ministry" and the myriad of programs of, or associated with, IBLP.     There were MANY, MANY benefits for which we are grateful but the erroneous teachings forced our decision.  We no longer support much of the work of this organization---however(!) we DO support our brothers and sisters in Christ and pray the LORD's will for them and do not seek to divide over this matter.  We believe that the erroneous teaching leads to an erroneous view of the Word, the grace of God, His design, the sovereignty of God, teaching "character" to unregenerate souls,  and the methods of lifting Scripture and its Truths and application and therefore do not endorse, as a whole, the ministry.  The above articles are clear examples.

"In the beginning the church was a fellowship of men and women centering on the living Christ.
Then the church moved to Greece where it became a philosophy.
Then it moved to Rome where it became an institution.
Next, it moved to Europe, where it became a culture.
And, finally, it moved to America where it became an enterprise."

Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate

The Calvin Debate...   John Calvin: writings, justification...
and accusation, too.

What does "Calvinism" mean, anyway?

This section is dedicated to the life, work and writings of John Calvin... and for the sake of "balance," a few arguments in opposition as well.  Herein I will include quotes, book titles, excerpts and a host of links to sites which hold volumes of information, writings and discussions of and regarding John Calvin.  I don't hold to all the tenets of the Reformed faith in that I do not believe in the cessation of the gifts---something most "Calvinist's" believe.  Nor do I believe in the practice of infant baptism or paedobaptism. (Here's a good article: A Critical Evaluation of Paedobaptism

There is an axiom that some, after acceptance of Christ Jesus as Saviour, ask Calvin into their hearts for good measure.  This page is not intended for the worship of a man, save only our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ.  John Calvin was simply a man, a faithful man used of God for edification and education of the church, certainly one of the most influential individuals in church history---and because of resulting republican government, history in general.

Calvin died in the year 1564 at the early age of 55.  Beza, his close friend and successor, described his death as having come quietly in his sleep, and then added:   “Thus withdrew into heaven, at the same time with the setting sun, that noble brilliant luminary, which was the lamp of the Church. On the following day and night there was intense grief and lamentation in the whole city; for the Republic had lost its wisest citizen, the Church its faithful shepherd, and the Academy and incomparable teacher.”   Buried in 1564 in  an unmarked grave (per his personal request).

NOTE:  we seek to proclaim the Truth. We have set not not label ourselves as Calvinist or Arminian but seek to present the Gospel in our site and through our lives.

The following is in answer to many questions we've had and questions we've received.

What is a Tulip?

Somewhere along the way Calvin's five points came to be summarized under the acronym TULIP.  Tough it is attributed to him, John Calvin did not coin the phrase. This, in answer to the "Arminian [James (Jacob) Arminius] position."   And what is that, you ask?  See the  Arminianism website.  You may see that James Arminius is AKA James Harmens, or Jacobus Arminius.

The deep Wesleyan theology out of which my husband's family (a long line of ministry - Free Methodist) comes, makes for some interesting conclusions and blending.  It also allows me sensitivity when it comes to this most unpredictably volatile or hotly debated doctrine.  For this reason, when  a person holds a different view, we carefully divide the person from the position and seek to see the heart of the matter of the person rather than simply dismissing the person as an imbecile with whom we disagree.   We even see things differently in our own home from time to time.   Jesus is still LORD regardless of what 'we' think about a particular dogma.  It's not profitable to argue doctrine seeing the LORD is our judge and overseer.  Learn to eat fruit---spit out seeds.  You'll live more peacefully with the brethren. I truly and firmly believe we shall ALL be pleasantly surprised at the composition of Saints in the Kingdom of Heaven when we meat the Saviour face to face in Glory.  Who knows but that we might one day link arms with the brother we once found intolerable.  Come LORD Jesus.

 So... the Tulip...

Hide God's Word in Your Heart

One of the most helpful tools I learned to utilize (from the Precept Bible Studies) is to ask questions and take notes as you study.    You may like to use Bible dictionaries, Strong's concordance, Commentaries, etc., but read the passage for yourself first and ask questions first and then consult the other material.    With every passage, keep in mind & seek to answer:    (5 W's &  an H) Who, What, Where, When, Why & How.

Who is speaking?   What is he/it saying?   Why is he/it saying it?   Who is he speaking to?    What does it mean?    When did this happen?   Where is the event taking place?  Where has this happened in the past---where in the future?  Why is it important?  How does this relate to the previous passage?    When has the Lord worked this way in the past?   What similarities are there in this passage and others regarding this same event (the Gospels).    How does this relate to the Old (or New) Testament?   What is this saying to me today?   When will this happen?  What are the cross references to this passage?  How am I to apply this?   Then MEMORIZE those passages that have special significance to you.

"What should I memorize," you ask?  The LORD will inspire you here through the Holy Spirit.  A wise man once shared with me that you can memorize any passage, verse or book of the Word... "you just have to get to where you 'Own It'..."  Once you "own" a passage... once you have read it and read it and eaten it and digested it and made it a part of your life, then: you own it; then you can read it back to the LORD, pray it back to Him, meditate on it in the night, while you are working, while you are driving... you will make it a part of your thinking... because you own it, the Holy Spirit will use it in your life to direct any decision or thought you have.

My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
I cheat you of your God-given destiny...because you demand your own way.
I cheat you of contentment...because you "deserve better than this."
I cheat you of knowledge...because you already know it all.
I cheat you of healing...because you're too full of me to forgive.
I cheat you of holiness...because you refuse to admit when you're wrong.
I cheat you of vision...becasue you'd rather look in the mirror than out a window.
I cheat you of genuine friendship...because nobody's going to know the real you.
I cheat you of love...because real romance demands sacrifice.
I cheat you of greatness in heaven...because you refuse to wash another's feet on earth.
I cheat you of God's glory...because I convince you to seek your own.
My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
You like me because you think I'm always looking out for you. Untrue.
God has so much for you, I admit.
But don't worry...
If you stick with me, you'll never know.

The Top 10 Reasons Why The Average Christian Can’t Play Baseball

10. Doesn’t practice all week, but expects to start on game day.

9. Gets upset when every ball that’s hit doesn’t come directly to him.

8. Never swings at a pitch because, “this pitcher doesn’t throw like the last pitcher. The game’s just not the same since he left.”

7. Wants to run home before going to first base.

6. Chatters in order to keep his own teammates from hitting the ball.

5. Doesn’t come to the game unless the coach personally calls him on the phone, each week, and invites him to show up.

4. Won’t run after the ball if it’s more than three feet away. After all, surely somebody will get it sooner or later.

3. Thinks baseball cleats are for leaving neat designs on his teammates backs.

2. Gets upset because the phone line to the bull pen doesn’t have call waiting. If it did, he could gripe about how bad the pitcher is doing, and yet never miss out if someone wanted to talk about the catcher.

1. Thinks the game will last so long, that the concession stand will be closed before it’s over.
