THE
most important part of family life is the
foundation that is laid. We believe
that it matters not
what a child learns if he
does not first have a firm foundation
based on the Word of God and Faith in Him.
All
the accumulated knowledge
in the world will be foolishness if without
first the wisdom of God.
And
ye shall teach them your children, speaking of
them
when thou sittest in
thine house, and when thou walkest by the way,
when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy 11.19

One
of the very best teaching / learning activities for our
children of all ages has been doing a sort of "unit
study" or a study of a specific topic and creating a
folder collage, a lap book (Now a trademarked name:
Lapbook) or a
unit scrapbook. I got my first ideas at a
homeschool convention many years ago and then I ordered
Dinah Zike's Big Book of Books - now, this was before
all the internet helps and even before she developed
what are now known as Foldables or "3-D" graphic
organizers.
Here is
a very good
basic description of how to make a topic scrapbook or
"lap book" or a folder of
mini-books, envelopes and pop-ups.Your own imagination
is all you need when you see a few examples of how these
mini books are created.
All you need,
you probably already have in your hand.
File folders, plain white and coloured paper, lined
paper, scissors, pens, crayons, markers and glue sticks.
Other embellishments are not necessary and may even
hinder creativity if you have to wait to go and buy
them!!
You can get started today making books of books.
We've made books of events, states, and other unit
studies.

Now, a
"lap book" needn't be difficult or pertain to a specific
basic subject study. No, a "lap book" can be the
vehicle to carry just about any bit of information you
want to gather and display. Again, your own
imagination and exploration is the limit. Look at
what others are doing if your imagination is dull and
needs a bit of sparking or jump-starting!
How about a
Madeline book?
And as you'll see from
The Runaway Bunny,
each book is a springboard for studying other related
topics!
Take a look at
these "lap books" and pocket books!
Here's an example of the Five-In-A-Row or FIAR story:
Gramma's Walk.
Now, if
you need more information, ideas and incentives to jump
on, here's the
Tobin's Lab site and book.

Do you lack information
regarding laws, organizations and materials
on the history and
founding of our country?
We have a great page of

Do you ever feel like you're wasting your time
or that you've had a wasted day?
Then here's a great article for you...
A Wasted Day? Many years ago my husband told me that the very
worst day of home schooling would be better than
the very, very best day or any day of public
schooling for our children. I've thought of
that many times over the years... especially on
one of those days that didn't go quite as
planned.
Through the years we have had some ups
and downs. And now, looking back, the very good
years outweigh any of difficult ones and the
good days far surpass any of the not-so-good
days. Through them all, God has remained
faithful and true. He has provided for every
thing that's been needed and had guided each
step of the way. We truly praise Him
—for any good has
surely been His doing. |

And now...
more of the Best Home Schooling Sites on the Web
Some of the
handiest tools we use in our schooling are... "lap-sized"
marker boards

I decided to look in the "scratch 'n
dent" section and ordered several from there. The
markers were priced in the 'case lot' of 30 and I chose
the 'assorted' rather than one colour. There is a "map"
board a blank "clock" board and a "story" board.
I use a large white board in my
kitchen that I purchased at Costco (this one is really
neat... comes with thin black tape to mark off sections)
On the top, I have lined off a section for the date,
another section for the daily events and in another
section I have each child's name and their personal
chores for the day/week/month.

Deuteronomy 6.4-9
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is
one LORD:
5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God
with all thine heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee
this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently
unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine
house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when
thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign
upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the
posts of thy house, and on thy gates. |
